How Valotrix Cart Rewards compares to other GWP apps

You're shopping for a Shopify gift-with-purchase app. There are six or seven mature options. Here's where Valotrix Cart Rewards sits.

This page is opinionated - you came here to compare, so we're going to give you the answer rather than hedge.

How the gift gets to the cart

This is the biggest architectural difference and it shows up in three places: your catalog, your Google Shopping feed, and what happens when you uninstall.

Valotrix Cart Rewards uses Shopify Functions for discounts. The gift line uses your real product variant - same SKU, same inventory, same image as any other line. At checkout, a Shopify Function applies a 100%-off discount targeted at gift lines only (matched by line properties). Your catalog stays untouched. If you uninstall Valotrix Cart Rewards, all that's left is a normal product variant with a real price.

Most competitors (BOGOS, Monster GWP, Bold Brain, the long tail of $0-variant apps) create a hidden $0-priced variant of your gift product and add that to the cart. This works but has three follow-on problems:

  • Catalog pollution. Every gift product gets a stand-in variant the merchant has to maintain.
  • Google Shopping feed breakage. The $0 variant gets exported to feeds unless you remember to exclude it. Free $200 jackets on Google Shopping is a bad day.
  • Orphan SKUs after uninstall. Uninstall the app, the $0 variants stay - your catalog now has dozens of dead variants you have to find and clean up.

A handful of newer competitors are migrating to Shopify Functions too. As of mid-2026, Valotrix Cart Rewards is the only mid-market app that's been Functions-first since day one.

Same price on every Shopify plan - Starter $5/mo, Basic $25/mo, Shopify $69/mo, Advanced $299/mo, and Plus $2,300+/mo. We don't have a Plus tier with a higher price.

The competitive landscape varies but a few common pricing surprises to watch for elsewhere:

  • "$X/month + Y¢ per gift redemption" - fee compounds as you scale.
  • "Free up to N orders / month, then $X" - locked out the moment a campaign actually works.
  • "Plus customers contact sales for pricing" - usually 3-5× the published tier.

What Valotrix Cart Rewards doesn't try to do

We're a gift-with-purchase + BOGO + tiered-reward app. Not a Swiss army knife. If you need any of these, get the right tool - they're better than what Valotrix Cart Rewards would do in two months:

  • Loyalty programs (points, lifetime tiers, member-only catalogs) - use Yotpo Loyalty, Smile.io, or LoyaltyLion.
  • Subscriptions - use Shopify's native subscription engine, Recharge, or Skio. We don't manage recurring orders.
  • Generic product upsells (post-purchase, related-product, "you might also like") - use Bold Upsell, ReConvert, or Honeycomb. Valotrix Cart Rewards only triggers free gifts on cart rules, not upsells on PDPs.
  • Reorder reminders - use a dedicated reorder app like Smartrr or a Klaviyo flow.
  • Wholesale pricing tiers - Shopify B2B has this natively. Valotrix Cart Rewards doesn't manage tiered B2B catalogs; if you need B2B-only campaigns today, use customer.tag_in against a B2B tag your B2B workflow applies to logged-in customers.
  • Discount code generation / popup builder - Shopify Discounts + a popup app like Privy. Valotrix Cart Rewards's popups are gift-promo popups, not generic email-capture popups.

If you want a tool that does five things, you'll get five mediocre features. We chose to do one thing well.

Where Valotrix Cart Rewards is heavier than the alternatives

In a few places, Valotrix Cart Rewards has features no comparable app exposes - or exposes only at much higher price tiers:

  • A/B testing on Scale. Run two rules of the same campaign as control + variant with deterministic visitor bucketing and Bayesian "chance to win" reporting. No competitor in the GWP segment offers this - closest comparable is Shopify's own A/B testing for theme sections, which doesn't reach promotions. See A/B testing.
  • Public REST API + outbound webhooks on Scale. Full programmatic control of campaigns, rules, widgets, and analytics - plus 9 outbound webhook events for gift-added, choice-selected, order-converted, campaign state changes. Only BOGOS offers a public API in this segment, and only at Plus-equivalent tiers. See Public API and Webhooks.
  • Custom code on Scale. Replace any widget's HTML / CSS / JS with your own. See Custom code.
  • Seven Custom Blocks. Inline storefront placements (threshold bar, PDP gift preview, PDP buy-get pairing, urgency banner, inline tier stack, collection eligibility overlay, gift unlock celebration). Each ships with multiple visual templates (8-10 templates per block, 62 total). No competitor exposes inline Liquid blocks at this depth - most competitors only paint widget overlays.   • 17 trigger condition types. Cart, line, customer, discount, market - composable via AND/OR/NOT. See Conditions.
  • Shopify Flow integration. Two triggers (gift added, order converted) and two actions (enable campaign, disable campaign). Lets you wire campaigns into business workflows beyond what the admin UI can express. See Flow recipes.

The honest summary

  • If you want a simple gift-with-purchase app for a single recurring promo and you're optimizing for price, the Free tier covers you.
  • If you want multiple campaigns, tiered rewards, and storefront polish, Growth $24/mo is the sweet spot.
  • If you want per-customer limits, geo-targeting, and discount-code-aware rules, Pro $49/mo.
  • If you're a mid-market or Plus store running serious experiments with full programmatic control, Scale $99/mo is priced substantially below the competitive landscape for equivalent features.
