A coupon code shared in a VIP email is exactly as exclusive as the forward button, since anyone can pass it along. Tag-based targeting works differently: the gift appears for the customers you have actually tagged, with no code to type and nothing that leaks past the people it was meant for. Here is how to set up an automatic free gift for your VIP and repeat customers on Shopify.
Why tags beat a coupon code for VIP treatment
A discount code is a piece of text. Once it exists, it can be shared, posted, or found by anyone who searches for it, whether or not they are the customer you meant to reward. A customer tag works differently: it is attached to the account rather than to a code, so the gift shows up for a shopper you have tagged and nobody else. There is nothing to copy into a coupon forum, because there is no coupon.
How tag-based targeting works
Most Shopify stores already have a way to tag customers, whether that is manual tagging in the admin, a loyalty app, or an automation that tags anyone who crosses a certain number of orders. Once a customer carries a tag, such as "VIP" or "repeat-customer," a campaign can use that tag as its trigger: any cart from a tagged customer gets the gift added automatically, at whatever subtotal you choose to require, without the shopper doing anything but shopping. See Customer targeting and the VIP-only recipe.
The tag does the identification for you, so the setup is not asking the customer to prove anything or remember anything.
Combine a tag with a spend threshold
A tag on its own can mean every purchase from a VIP customer gets a free gift, which may be more generous than you intend. Layering a spend threshold on top tightens it: a tagged customer gets the gift once their cart reaches a chosen subtotal, so the reward still requires a real purchase, just at a friendlier bar than what a regular customer would need to clear. See Threshold free gift.
Cap it with a per-customer limit
A recurring VIP gift can turn into an ongoing cost if a tagged customer orders often and gets the gift every single time. A per-customer limit caps how many times a given shopper can receive the reward, whether that is once ever or up to a set number of times you choose. This keeps the gift feeling like an occasional thank-you rather than a standing discount baked into every order. See Per-customer limits.
Make it feel like a thank-you, not a coupon
The framing matters as much as the mechanics. A coupon code reads as a discount, something the shopper found or was handed, that reduces a price. A gift that appears automatically in the cart because of who the shopper is reads as recognition instead. A few ways to keep it feeling that way:
- Skip cart messaging that mentions a code or a percentage off. Let the gift simply appear.
- If you use an on-site nudge, keep the copy about the gift itself, such as "you have unlocked our thank-you gift," rather than about a discount mechanic.
- Keep the reward modest and consistent rather than escalating it every time, so it reads as a standing gesture rather than a negotiation.
Setting it up
- Tag your VIP or repeat customers in the admin, or confirm your loyalty app or automation already does this.
- Create a campaign from the VIP-only starter template, or build one from scratch. See Your first campaign.
- Set the trigger to the customer tag, and add a spend threshold if you want the reward to require a real purchase.
- Set a per-customer limit if the gift should be occasional rather than recurring.
- Test the setup in the simulator with a tagged test customer before it goes live. See Simulator.
The mechanics of how the gift gets added and stays free through checkout work the same way as any other automatic gift-add campaign; see How it works. The tag is just the trigger, so this campaign fits alongside any other gift offers you are already running.
